VISION FOR ROYAL OAK

We have a great community, with strong neighborhoods, and quality city services. But to keep
things on the right track, we need leadership that listens, understands the needs of our
residents and is always striving to improve on what’s not working. With your support, I will
dedicate my passion, skills, and expertise to making Royal Oak even better.
Neighborhood Preservation

Create strong neighborhoods by continuing to improve our parks, protecting greenspace, holding landlords and builders accountable, and supporting neighborhood associations.

A key concept in our new master plan remains unchanged from previous versions- we will maintain the integrity and individuality of our neighborhoods.

Encourage residents to take advantage of city services such as free tree plantings to expand our canopy and low-interest home improvement loans. Connecting residents with these resources helps preserve and enhance the character of our neighborhoods, ensuring Royal Oak remains a welcoming and vibrant community for generations to come.

Quality Public Services

A strong city has strong quality public services.  These are no “nice-to-have” amenities, but rather the things that contribute and make a place inviting and a top destination in the region.  These are the core components that make residents want to live here.

  • Support our Police, Fire & EMT to keep our community safe

  • Increase opportunity for seniors in our city by funding quality programming at our senior center and improved transportation options

  • Continue upgrading our parks to provide accessible, modern, and well-maintained recreational spaces for all residents.

  • Invest in the Farmers' Market, repairing crumbling infrastructure and ensure the Market lasts another 100 years!

Sustainability

Support the city's goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 by advancing policies that reduce energy use, promote clean transportation, and invest in sustainable infrastructure.

Enhance the Community Benefits Policy to ensure that new developments incorporate sustainable building practices, energy efficiency, and green infrastructure, holding builders accountable for reducing environmental impact.

Preserve and expand green space and our tree canopy to improve air quality, provide shade, and enhance biodiversity.

Strengthen stormwater management through smart planning, permeable surfaces, and improved infrastructure. Over the last four years, the city has invested millions in green infrastructure - like bioswales and rain gardens—to reduce basement flooding and manage stormwater more effectively. Continuing these efforts will help prevent another disaster like the August 2014 flood.

Community

Increasing Community Engagement:

• Increase resident participation in all decisions

• Better use technology to share information

• Strengthen & empower citizen boards and committees

Ensure that our community fosters a culture of safety, awareness, and tolerance

Housing

Royal Oak should be a community where people can find a home at every stage of life- whether it’s a first apartment on your own, a starter home, a larger space to raise a family, or a place to downsize later in life. To remain that kind of community, we must ensure housing opportunities are available, diverse, and accessible for everyone.
